Mapleneck ‘59
Original: Oil on canvas
24" x 30"
Any skilled axeman would sell his soul for a 1959 Fender Stratocaster, with its big, bold sound and amazing design that forever changed the way guitars were made. Who hasn't played one? Keith, Jimi, Bob, Eric, Jeff, Pete, and ten thousand others, famous and not. Pure American maple fretboards were used for just a few years, hence the nickname Mapleneck for 1950s Strats. This is one of the very last Maplenecks, with its three-tone sunburst laquer. And that lovely Persian Sarouk rug, woven deep in the Faraghan plains of Persia around the start of a century just past. The finest ones cost a small fortune, their collectors forever enchanted by the Sarouk’s remarkable, subtle transformation from pale rose to blinding red to deepest scarlet as the day’s light changes from dawn through to twilight. There is nothing being made like it in the world today; takes a century just to get the colors faded right.
